NDRF ORGANISED PREPARATORY MEETING OF BIMSTEC- DISASTER MANAGEMENT EXERCISE-2017

“The preparatory meeting of Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation Disaster Management Exercise-2017” (BIMSTEC DMEx-2017) started today at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The main objective of the Preparatory Meeting is to work out the modalities and requirement of BIMSTEC DMEx-2017 in advance. The BIMSTEC DMEx-2017 is scheduled w.e.f 10-13 Oct, 2017. The exercise is being organised by NDRF as lead agency.

The main focus of BIMSTEC DMEx-2017 will be to test the inter-Governmental coordination efforts, create synergy and synchronise efforts to institutionalise regional cooperation in disaster response among the member countries.

Sh. Sanjay Kumar, Director General, NDRF welcomed the august gathering, highlighted the objective of preparatory meeting and said that this meeting will be helpful to chalk out the plan for main BIMSTEC exercise.

Lt. Gen (Retd.) N.C. Marwah, PVSM, AVSM, Member, NDMA inaugurated the meeting and applauded NDRF efforts for organizing BIMSTEC DMEx-2017. He highlighted the disaster vulnerability of BIMSTEC region and changing trends of disasters due to climate change, global warming, unplanned construction & population growth. He asserted on preparedness measure, advance early warning systems and mutual support of all BIMSTEC nation at the time of disaster. Hon’ble chief guest also highlighted the need of regional and International cooperation among the BIMSTEC region for effective disaster management and disaster risk reduction.

Mr. Prashant Agrawal, Joint Secretary, BIMSTEC & SAARC during his address highlighted the vulnerability profile of Himalaya region and measures to be taken for these disasters. He said that to tackle the disasters and strengthen the response system in SAARC & ASEAN regions, an international organization BIMSTEC was formed on 06 June 1997.

Mr. Arjun Katoch, Member of Advisory Committee of NDMA delivered a presentation on International Disaster Response System. Mr. Kamal Kishore, Member, NDMA highlighted the Vulnerability profile of BIMSTEC region.

The country representatives of each country made presentation on Disaster Management setup in their respective country.

Sh. R.K. Rana, Dy Inspector General NDRF and Sh. P.K. Srivastava briefed to delegates about the main exercise whichcomprises Table Top Exercise (TTX), Field Training Exercise (FTX) and After Action review (AAR), exercise scenarios, venues and conduct of exercise.

The programme is being attended by the delegates from all BIMSTEC nation (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand). Besides, representatives from BIMSTEC Secretariate, Dhaka, MHA, MEA, IMD, CWC, DDMA and NDMA also present during the event.
