CYCLONE YAAS : NDRF TEAMS DEPLOYED ON EASTERN COAST

In view of Cyclonic storm ‘Yaas’, total 109 self-contained teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been committed for the coastal districts of West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand and Andaman and Nicobar island after consultation with respective state authorities.

Among the total 109 teams, 32 teams have been deployed at the coastal districts of West Bengal and 10 more teams are being airlifted in addition to the 03 teams kept on alert in the state. For an effective response, 44 teams have been placed at coastal districts of Odisha whereas 08 teams are kept as immediate reserve at Mundali, Cuttack NDRF Base which may be used as situation demands. 02 teams are deployed in Tamil Nadu and 01 team is on alert at Arakkonam NDRF BN, 03 teams are deployed in Jharkhand and 02 teams are on standby in the state. Besides, 03 teams are deployed in Andhra Pradesh and 01 team is deployed at Andaman and Nicobar Island.

Seeing the urgency of the situation, so far 48 NDRF teams have been airlifted from different locations and deployed in West Bengal and Odisha.

IMD has warned that the deep depression over Eastcentral Bay of Bengal will get intensified into an Cyclonic storm ‘Yaas’ and very likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by 25 May morning and further into a very severe cyclonic storm by subsequent hours. It is very likely to cross North Odisha - West Bengal coast between Paradip and Sagar Island around evening of 26 May.

NDRF teams are 24*7 constantly engaged with the State & District administration in evacuating people to safer places or cyclone shelters and sensitizing localities about the preventive measures.

HQ NDRF is closely monitoring developments and all efforts are being made to ensure zero casualty and minimum damage to life and property.
