In the late night of 02.08.2016, a British-era bridge on Savitri river linking Mahad and Poladpur on the Mumbai-Goa highway at Mahad in Raigad district in Konkan collapsed in heavy rain. In this incident 22 people (18 passengers, two drivers and two conductors) are feared killed as the two State transport buses in which they were travelling were washed away.

On requisition of DDMO Distt- Raigad, Maharashtra and the direction given by DG, NDRF teams based at Mumbai & Pune rushed to the incident site. The 04 teams of NDRF comprising 117 rescuers, 12 Inflatable Rubber Boats (IRBs), Lifebuoy, Life Jackets and other flood related rescue equipment started the operations. Keeping the gravity of the incident NDRF deputed Sh S P Selvan, DIG South zone NDRF and Commandant 05Bn NDRF to supervise the rescue ops. Despite the strong currents of the overflowing Savitri river and odd weather conditions, the brave hearts of NDRF delivering their best to trace for the victims and vehicles washed away by the water. The NDRF teams comprising of expert deep divers are searching the surrounding area of the collapsed bridge even though the current is strong.

During search and rescue operations NDRF teams recovered total 04 dead bodies. On 11.08.2016, in a joint operations of Navy and NDRF, the chassis and seats of on e of the washed away bus was taken out.
