Shri Atul Karwal, IPS
Shri Atul Karwal is an IPS officer of 1988 batch, borne on Gujarat cadre. Born on 04.03.1964, Shri Karwal is B.E. (Mechanical Engg.) and M.B.A. He served as Superintendent of Police Valsad, Rajkot Rural, Porbandar, Junagadh, Mehsana Districts and as Dy. Commissioner of Police Vadodara City, Surat City and Ahmadabad City. He was also Commandant, State Reserve Police Force, Group 13, Rajkot. On deputation as Asst. Director (Outdoor Training) in Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad from 1998-2002, he trained 4 batches of IPS officers. As Deputy Inspector General of Police, he served as DIG Planning and Modernization, in DGP Office, Gandhinagar. As Inspector-General of Police, he served as IG, Anti-Terrorist Squad, Gujarat, Joint CP (Traffic), Joint CP, Sector-2, Ahmedabad City and Jt. Director, Gujarat Police Academy. As IG, CRPF, Srinagar he supervised 23 Battalions in Srinagar for Counter Terrorist operations and Law and Order. He was also IG (Trg) CRPF, IG (Pers) CRPF and ADG (Pers), CRPF and Director SVP National Police Academy Hyderabad, before joining the National Disaster Response Force as Director General.
He was adjudged the ‘Best Officer Trainee’ of his batch during his basic training in the SVP National Police Academy. He was awarded the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010, the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016, the Police Medal for Gallantry on Republic Day 2020 and the 1st Bar to PMG on Independence Day 2020. He has been awarded the Kathin Seva Padak for his duties in Srinagar and the Parakram Padak for an operation in Kashmir. He has also been awarded the Ati Utkrisht Seva Padak and Commendation Discs by Director SVP NPA (1), DG J&K (1) and DG CRPF (5).
He is an ultra-marathoner and a Triathlete. He completed the 12 week Police Commando Course with National Security Guard in 1994, won a Silver Medal in Individual Tent Pegging in the All India Police Equestrian Meet, 1997, is a Black Belt in Martial Arts, is trained in Scuba Diving and Sky Diving and scaled Mount Everest on 22nd May, 2008 as a member of the Indian Police Mount Everest Expedition.
He joined the National Disaster Response Force as Director General on 15th November, 2021.
