Schools are critical infrastructure. A safe and secure environment is a prerequisite for effective teaching and learning. Thus ensuring safety of children, teachers and staff members during disasters is necessary. A large number of schools in Delhi operates in congested urban areas and are exposed to various hazards as the city lies in the sensitive seismic Zone IV and can face the nature’s fury any time. They are not only the beneficiaries themselves but also the catalyst to spread awareness among their families & neighborhood. Focus for the current fortnight has been kept on KVs in Delhi & NCR. It will be prudent to consider the effects of such a potential earthquake for developing a prevention-cumpreparedness plan.

Today, to sensitize the children and staff of Kendriya Vidhyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and to minimize causalities and injuries during disasters, School Safety Programmes were organized by NDRF at various schools in Delhi & NCR viz. KV JNU, Mehrauli, KV Gole Market, KV Dwarka Sector 05 & 12 in New Delhi and KV, Ghaziabad, U.P.

During the programme, students were sensitized through lectures and presentation about need of school safety and earthquake safety measures to be taken before, during and after followed by demonstration & practice about medical first aid like CPR, Bleeding Control, Drowning, Chocking, Carrying Methods and Improvised Stretcher and evacuation drill.

After evacuation drill, an impressive demonstration on high rise rescue was carried out by NDRF responders. As a part of demonstration, hypothetical scenarios of earthquake were created, NDRF team carried out search of missing and rescue of trapped victims with the help of various the-state-of-the-art cutting and rope rescue equipment. The drill was followed by dog show. The exercise was witnessed by more than 15,000 students & staff.

NDRF is committed to serve humanity and abide by its motto “Aapda Seva Sadaiv”. Force is working simultaneously towards disaster resilience of the country by imparting awareness training as well as capacity building programme to the people for disaster risk reduction. In the year 2016 alone, Force has organized more than 390 school safety programmes and sensitized approx. 1,65,252 students across the country.
